Group D match between Russia and Mexico was more important for Russian team then for Mexico who held the bottom position in the table. In case of winning Russians would qualify to the round of sixteen. As it is said in the regulations, “if two or more teams have gained the same number of points after the group matches have been completed, classification is decided by results in points between the teams concerned”. Thus, if Serbia will beat Tunisia in their group D match, they can gain equal points with Russia, but on August 9 Russians beat Serbs 29:24.
There were no surprises in the match of Russian and Mexican teams. Russians played better, won 32:14 (first half 15:7) and qualified to the round of sixteen.
